Steam engine, built in 1923 for the LNER, which travelled at 157kph/97.5mph on 30 November 1934 (causing it to be often described as the first engine to go at 100mph). Designed by Nigel Gresley (1876–1941), the engine was retired by British Rail in 1963 but has been saved from the scrapheap. It was in Australia in 1988–9 to celebrate the bicentenary, and was then driven by enthusiasts in Britain on private railways. After a refit of £1 million during 1999, it returned to occasional service on special occasions on the London to Edinburgh and Inverness line.
