flint

Much used in the past as an exterior surface for cottages in East Anglia. The flints are set either with the pale outer curve of the complete cobble showing or with a flat black surface where one has been split (knapped flint). Framed by bricks (needed to provide firm edges at corners or around windows), the material makes very attractive patterns.
