(1646–1719) English astronomer and, at the age of 29, the first *Astronomer Royal. In the newly established *Royal Observatory he made the systematic observations which led to his 3-volume Historia Coelestis Britannica (British Celestial History), published posthumously in 1725. This included his British Catalogue of 2935 stars observed at Greenwich, which forms the basis of all subsequent star catalogues.
