fish and chips
|
|
Britain's traditional fast food, consisting of deep-fried fillets of fish in batter and potato chips. In the old days, as an early form of takeaway, the fish and chips were carried from the shop in a twist of newspaper. The first recorded use of the phrase is surprisingly early (1876). Perhaps less surprisingly, it is a complaint: 'Fish and chip shops were a considerable source of nuisance'.
