(1886–1926) Novelist who became a cult figure through his stylishly fantastic plots, his oblique methods of narrative and his sly dialogue. He was as exotic as his books; a wit, a dandy, a homosexual, a convert to Roman Catholicism and a rich invalid, he spent much of his short life travelling for his health. His best-known book is Valmouth (1919), set in a British spa town where people have unusually long and active sex lives; the central character is a sensual black masseuse, Mrs Yajn/avalkya.
