'15 Rebellion
|
|
(also known simply as the Fifteen) The first of two military attempts to recover the throne for the *Stuarts from the house of *Hanover. An uprising began in Scotland in September 1715, and the rebels had suffered two defeats (at Preston and Sherrifmuir) before James *Stuart himself landed at Peterhead on December 22. He went to *Scone where his coronation was being prepared, but the approach of the English and the weakness of his own position caused him to beat a hasty retreat. He was back in France by February 10. Thirty years later his son's equivalent effort in the *'45 Rebellion was less of a fiasco.
