Gracie Fields

(stage name of Grace Stansfield, 1898–1979, DBE 1979) *Music-hall performer from Lancashire who became a national star ('Our Gracie') after being seen in London in Mr Tower of London (1924). Her film career began in 1931 with Sally in our Alley (featuring the famous 18C song of that name) and included Sing As We Go (1934), which she chose as the title of her autobiography.
