(1912–53) Contralto who established herself as one of Britain's best-loved singers in a tragically brief career before her death from cancer. Her talent was recognized in her first London appearance, in Handel's *Messiah in Westminster Abbey in 1943. Best known for her concert performances of song cycles and of works such as Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, she also performed the title roles in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia and Gluck's Orfeo at Glyndebourne in 1946–7. She made memorable recordings of English folk songs, such as Blow the wind southerly.
