Fens
|
|
Low-lying coastal area in eastern England, about 120km/75m north to south from Lincoln to Cambridge, and in places extending some 50km/30m inland from the *Wash (of which the region is a silted up extension). The Fens were peaty marshland with occasional firm islands (most notably *Ely) until drainage was undertaken in the 17–19C. They are now rich agricultural land.
