Thomas Fairfax
|
|
(1612–71, kt 1640, 3rd baron 1648) The leading general, with Oliver *Cromwell, on the parliamentary side during the *English Civil War. The two scored their first notable success at *Marston Moor (1644). In 1645 Fairfax was given the task of forming the *New Model Army, and he and Cromwell (his second-in-command) were victorious together at *Naseby (1645). Politically Fairfax was moderate. He was appointed one of the judges of *Charles I, but refused to sit; he was later an active supporter of the Restoration, but objected to the body of Cromwell being exhumed and hung in chains. He spent most of his time after 1650 in retirement in Yorkshire.
