Exmoor
|
|
Area of high moorland bounded by steep wooded valleys, on the border of Somerset and Devon. It was designated in 1954 a *national park (686sq.km/265sq.m). Its rock formations are mainly of slate or sandstone, the highest peak being Dunkery Beacon (520m/1705ft). The moor is famous for its wildlife, supporting red deer (still hunted in the 1990s and the subject of much controversy), the Exmoor horned sheep and the famous Exmoor ponies – one of the oldest native British breeds.
