John Evelyn
|
|
(1620–1706) Author of one of the two great English diaries of the 17C, very different in kind from the other – that of *Pepys, who was a friend of Evelyn's. Where Pepys has left an intensely personal document, Evelyn's is a record of the public life of his time from someone singularly well placed to observe it (he began noting down significant events as a child of about eleven). He was part of the court circle, was a founding member of the *Royal Society and had a breadth of interest which enabled him to write books on subjects as varied as engraving (Sculptura 1662) and forestry (Sylva 1664). The diary was published first in 1818 and in an authoritative 6-volume edition in 1955.
