(1888–1976, DBE 1946) Actress who worked as a milliner before making her first amateur appearance on stage, as Viola in *Twelfth Night, at the age of 22. Her professional career began two years later. She excelled in portraying strong and slightly eccentric characters; Millamant in The *Way of the World in 1924 was her first major success with the public, and Lady Bracknell in The *Importance of Being Earnest became by far her best-known role.
