(Hugh Dowding, 1882–1970, KCB 1933, baron 1943) Airman in charge from 1936 of the newly created Fighter Command of the RAF. He was responsible for providing radar stations round the south coast and an effective fighting force of *Hurricanes and *Spitfires in time for World War II. As overall commander during the *Battle of Britain, much of the strategic credit was his. In 1988 a statue of him was placed in front of *St Clement Danes.
