The Establishment
|
|
A term long applied to those holding power in any community, which became increasingly used in the late 1950s to describe the tightly-knit circles perceived to be in control of Britain. The word was applied to the 'governing classes' by A.J.P. *Taylor in the New Statesman in 1953 and was much enlarged upon by Henry Fairlie in 1955 in the Spectator (the article which gave the term its wider currency). In the early 1960s it was used as the name of a satirical nightclub in London.
