The Entertainer
|
|
(1957) Play by John *Osborne about a down-at-heel music-hall comedian, Archie Rice, who communicates with his family in a string of gags and only comes alive when engaging the audience with his old routines ('Why should I care?' is his favourite number). In the end even the routines fail him, after his son has been killed at *Suez and his father, a more dignified entertainer of the old school, has died. Archie provided a magnificent part for Laurence Olivier, both on stage and film (1960).
