English Stage Company
|
|
Established specifically to present contemporary drama, in particular by writers new to the theatre, the company opened in 1956 under the direction of George Devine (1910–66) at the *Royal Court Theatre in London, which has remained its home. Its first season was a spectacular success because it included *Look Back in Anger. John Osborne's play sparked off a revival in the British theatre in which the English Stage Company has continued to play a leading role.
