Emma
|
|
(1816) Novel by Jane *Austen. The heroine, Emma Woodhouse, is a self-satisfied manipulator of other people's affections and aspirations, in particular those of the pretty but socially inferior Harriet Smith. After many painful complications caused by Emma's meddling, the naturally suited couples do at last come together – Harriet and the young farmer Robert Martin, Emma herself and the eligible Mr Knightley.
