Doune Castle
|
|
(14km/9m NW of Stirling) An important stronghold of the Stewarts (later *Stuarts), who built it in the 14C and in whose hands it remains. Roofless from neglect by the 18C but sensitively restored in the late 19C, it is today a very well preserved ruin with its interior sufficiently intact to suggest vividly how its occupants lived. Also at Doune is a motor museum, with a collection of rare and early cars.
