Elizabethan
|
|
Term used almost invariably of the reign of *Elizabeth I rather than *Elizabeth II. Architectural historians apply it to the English version of the continental Renaissance style, seen in such houses as *Longleat or *Hardwick. It is more popularly used of *timber-frame houses, particularly of the black-and-white variety, which in fact were built for many years before and after the Elizabethan period.
