(22,000 in 1991) Seaport and resort, capital of the *Isle of Man since 1869, when it replaced Castletown. A town rich in Victorian domestic architecture, from the period of its first prosperity, it acquired also a busy financial sector in the late 20C because local levels of taxation, the responsibility of the *Tynwald, were more lenient than in the UK. The Manx Museum has an excellent collection of stone carvings from the early Christian and the Viking periods, in particular an extraordinary Crucifixion of the 8C on a slab of local slate which was found on the Calf of Man, a small island off the coast. The *TT Races start and finish at Douglas.
