Edinburgh Zoo

|
Established by Thomas Gillespie and opened to the public in 1913 – four years after the founding of the Zoological Society of Scotland. It became famous in 1919 for its successful hatching of a king penguin chick. The penguins, the first seen outside the Antarctic, had been received in 1914 from a whaling expedition; and the resulting colony is still a special pride of the zoo.
