Eclipse
|
|
(foaled 1764) Chestnut colt which was the most successful racehorse of the 18C, named because he was foaled during a total eclipse of the sun. He ran 18 recorded races, winning them all (a win/loss record still unbeaten). Three of the first five *Derby winners were sired by him and he is the ancestor of the majority of *thoroughbreds. His skeleton is preserved in the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket. The Eclipse Stakes, named in his honour in 1886, is run at *Sandown Park.
