East End
|
|
The area to the east of the old walled city of London, stretching from the Tower of London along the north bank of the Thames. Much of it lies within the modern borough of Tower Hamlets. As the home of the *cockneys, the East End (named in contrast to the *West End) has historically had an image of poverty tempered by great vitality. The London docks, now defunct, were an essential part of the area's economy.
