(1945–87) Brilliant cellist whose career struck a profound chord with the public, first through her early success and later because of her tragically early retirement, at the age of 28, as a victim of multiple sclerosis. She had her debut recital in 1961 at the Wigmore Hall and first appeared at the Festival Hall in the following year, performing Elgar's cello concerto – a work with which she became particularly associated. In 1967 she married Daniel Barenboim.
