John Duns
|
|
(known as Duns Scotus, c.1265–1308) Theologian and Franciscan friar, born in the village of Duns in the Borders region of Scotland. His writings, full of so many nice distinctions that he became known as the 'subtle doctor', are Britain's main contribution to medieval scholastic philosophy. By the 16C his followers, still splitting hairs, had become objects of ridicule – inspiring the excellent word 'dunces'.
