(1000 in 1991) Town in the Tayside region. Beneath wooded hills on the river Tay, this was the site of a Celtic monastery from at least the 9C and probably earlier. It became the seat of a bishopric in the 12C and the cathedral dates from the 14–15C; apart from the choir, which remained in use as a parish church, it has been a romantic ruin since the Reformation. The 'Little Houses' lining the approach to the cathedral are of the early 18C, and the nearby bridge over the Tay was built by Telford in 1809.
