Dunfermline
(52,000 in 1991) Town in Fife which had a long and close connection with the Scottish royal family. *Malcolm III and his wife St Margaret built a palace here and founded a Benedictine priory (later raised to the status of an abbey). They were both buried in the abbey grounds, as were many later kings of Scotland including *Robert the Bruce. The 12C Romanesque nave of the abbey had a new choir added to it in 1817–22 (by William Burn), and this is now the parish church.
Dunfermline was the birthplace of Andrew *Carnegie, and the small cottage where he was born is preserved as a museum. His father worked in Dunfermline's main trade, the weaving of damask linen.
