(11km/7m N of Stirling) Town on the Allan Water, crossed here by a single-span 16C bridge, in the Central region of Scotland. It is known in particular for its cathedral, which has been used since the Reformation as the parish church. Founded by *David I in about 1150, the building dates mainly from the 13C with considerable restoration in the early 20C. The west front is a very fine example of the Early English style, and was singled out for special praise by John *Ruskin. As a result the oval window beneath the gable is now known by his name.
