(312,000 in 1991) Ancient mining and smelting town in the West Midlands, sometimes known as the capital of the *Black Country. Dudley Zoo has been in the grounds of the ruined Norman castle since 1935. An excellent small museum, specializing in the history of glass, was opened in 1980 in Broadfield House; and the Black Country Museum is 2km/1m to the north of the town.
