The Duchess of Malfi
|
|
(c.1613) Tragedy with elements of black comedy by John *Webster. The duchess, a young widow, sets the plot spinning by secretly marrying her honest steward, Antonio, in direct opposition to the wishes of her powerful and evil brothers, a duke and a cardinal. They place a spy, Bosola, in her household. By the end of the play, after much cruelty and torment, the machinations of Bosola and the brothers have led to the death of all five main characters.
