and DSM (Distinguished Service Cross and Medal) Decorations for gallantry in the Royal Navy, instituted in 1914 and extended in 1942 to the merchant navy. The DSC is awarded to officers below the rank of captain and to warrant officers, the DSM to chief petty officers and below. The DSC was a continuation under a new name of the Conspicuous Service Cross, established for the same purpose by Edward VII in 1901.
