Dr Dolittle
|
|
An unconventional doctor, expert in animal languages who takes the part of animals against human beings. He is the hero of a series of children's books by Hugh Lofting (1886–1947), beginning with The Story of Doctor Dolittle (1920). Lofting, who was born in Britain and who conceived Dolittle when serving in the trenches with the Irish Guards, spent most of his life after World War I in the USA. He illustrated the books himself in a very precise linear style.
