(London SW1) The headquarters in the Haymarket of the Design Council, known to the public chiefly as a location for exhibitions. The council was established in 1944 to improve design in British industry – precisely the motive which in the previous century prompted the *Great Exhibition and the *Victoria and Albert Museum. In keeping with this tradition the council had responsibility for all the official exhibitions in the *Festival of Britain (1951).
