desert rats
|
|
Nickname originally used for soldiers who served with the British 7th Armoured Division in the North Africa campaign of 1941–2; it derived from the badge which the division had adopted, that of a rat which lives in hot sandy places (the jerboa). The desert rats were prominent among the British troops sent to Kuwait in 1990 prior to the *Gulf War, though reduced by then to the 7th Armoured Brigade.
