(London SE8 & SE14) Area on the south bank of the Thames, west of Greenwich, which was a fishing village until *Henry VIII chose it as the site for a royal dock, in which his navy was built and maintained. It retained its importance as a shipyard until the 19C. It was here that the Russian emperor, Peter the Great, worked incognito as a carpenter for three months in 1698 to gather ideas on design for his own navy.
