David II
|
|
(1324–71) King of Scotland from 1329; son of *Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth de Burgh; married first in 1328 (when he was four) Joanna, the infant sister of *Edward III, and second in 1363 Margaret Drummond. His long reign was one of almost unbroken disaster. Edward III, in spite of being his brother-in-law, supported a rival for the Scottish throne. David spent seven years in exile in France and 11 years as a captive of the English, after which he was financially crippled by the agreed ransom. He was succeeded by his nephew *Robert II (see the *royal house of Scotland).
