Dartmoor
Area of high moorland in Devon, designated in 1951 a *national park (945sq.km/365sq.m). The district is known for its semi-wild ponies and for its crags (or tors) of granite which rise from the heather. The highest peaks, side by side in the north, are Yes Tor (618m/2028ft) and High Willhays (621m/2039ft).
The small town of Princetown has grown up round Dartmoor prison, built in the *Napoleonic wars to house French prisoners. Since 1850 it has been in use as a conventional prison, considered one of the most secure because of the exposed surrounding countryside.
