Danegeld
|
|
Tax levied in the *Anglo-Saxon kingdoms to buy off the invading Danes, in particular between 991 and 1013. It provided Kipling (in his poem Dane-Geld) with a telling couplet on appeasement. He concludes, That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld You never get rid of the Dane.
