(1889–1952, kt 1930) Labour politician and MP for Bristol East (1931–50), remembered in particular as the chancellor of the exchequer (1947–50) who kept tight control during Britain's years of austerity after World War II. A barrister by profession (appointed attorney general in 1930), he was sent by Churchill as ambassador to Russia (1940–2) and had a place in the war cabinet in charge of aircraft production (1942–5).
