corgi
|
|
(also known as Welsh corgi) Either of two similar but distinct breeds of cattle-driving dogs, with short legs, long bodies and fox-like features, in use on Welsh farms for many centuries before becoming more widely known as pets. Their name derives from the Welsh cor (dwarf) and ci (dog). The Cardigan Welsh corgi has a long tail, whereas that of the Pembroke Welsh corgi is docked. The latter is by far the better known as a result of being the favourite dog of Elizabeth II; she was given a pair by her father, George VI, and now there are usually seven or eight in the royal entourage.
