(Catherine Fawcett, 1906-98, DBE 1993, m. Thomas Cookson 1940) Author, one of the most popular in Britain, who did not publish a book until she was 44. Her novels are naturalistic stories, romantic rather than sentimental, of everyday life during her youth in her own part of England, the northeast. They have tended to be written in series, following a particular character or family for a while and then turning to another. The main characters, in sequence, have been Mary Ann, the Mallen family, Tilly Trotter and Bill Bailey.
