comprehensive school

Type of *state secondary school introduced from the 1950s. Comprehensives are committed to taking all children, of whatever ability, from a given area; they were devised to avoid the guillotine of the eleven-plus in the selection of children for *grammar schools and secondary moderns. Nearly all provide facilities for pupils to stay beyond the age of 16 to take A levels.
