The high-street banks, providing facilities for members of the public to write cheques (in addition to other services). The name refers to membership of the London Bankers' Clearing House, an institution in which all the cheques drawn on any day are balanced against each other so that only the net result is credited or debited to each bank's account with the *Bank of England.
