Children's Hour
|
|
(BBC 1922–64) The main children's radio programme for two generations in Britain, beginning in the first year of the *BBC's existence and broadcast early every evening. For many years it had regional editions, and presenters round the country became much loved as Uncle or Aunt; the best known was London's Uncle Mac (Derek McCulloch, 1897–1967). It was he who played the part of Larry the Lamb in the programme's famous Toytown series, which began in 1929. There were widespread protests when Children's Hour was brought to an end in 1964; audiences were falling because of the rise of television and the success of programmes such as *Blue Peter.
