Cheviots
|
|
Range of rounded hills, mainly in Northumberland, which for about 56km/35m form the border between England and Scotland. The Cheviots were for centuries the scene of border warfare, reflected in the ballad *Chevy Chase. The central road north passes through Carter Bar, and the highest peak is the Cheviot itself (816m/2676ft). The *sheep bred in the hills have soft pliable wool, excellent for spinning, and the name cheviot has become a general term for any similar wool or fabric.
