Cheltenham Festival
|
|
There are two annual cultural events under this name at *Cheltenham. The music festival, held in June or July, was established immediately after World War II; the composers taking part in 1945 included William *Walton, Benjamin *Britten and Arthur *Bliss. The emphasis has tended to be on contemporary British music, and for a while there was a particularly strong link with the *Hallé orchestra and Barbirolli; they appeared at 15 successive festivals from 1947. The other Cheltenham Festival, founded only slightly later (1949), is concerned with literature; held each autumn, it has developed into Britain's major annual gathering of writers and their readers.
