Cheddar Gorge
|
|
(11km/7m NW of Wells) Ravine winding for about 3km/2m through the Mendips between limestone cliffs (in places 130m/425ft high) before emerging at Cheddar. The cliffs are riddled with hundreds of caves, inhabited in prehistoric times. The two most dramatic, with their stalactites and stalagmites, are Gough's Cave and Cox's Cave. Jacob's Ladder is a steep flight of 322 steps up one face of the gorge. A smaller nearby gorge, Burrington Combe, is believed in local tradition to have inspired the famous hymn *Rock of Ages.
