Charing Cross Road
|
|
(London WC2) A thoroughfare created in the 1880s by the widening of narrow slum streets leading north from Trafalgar Square. It became associated in particular with second-hand bookshops, a reputation widely publicized by the book and play 84 Charing Cross Road, based on Helene Hanff's correspondence from New York with the firm of Marks and Co. (which ceased trading in 1970 when the site was redeveloped).
