CENTO
|
|
(Central Treaty Organization) Middle-eastern alliance for military, economic and technological cooperation which began with the Baghdad Pact of 1955 between Iraq and Turkey. Later that year Britain, Iran and Pakistan joined, but in 1958 Iraq withdrew (after a revolution); the headquarters then moved to Ankara and the name was changed to CENTO. The USA was never a full member but was closely involved. In 1979 Iran and Pakistan withdrew and the alliance was brought to an end.
